National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Today and the following days are an opportunity to recognize the visionary strength, leadership, and knowledge of Indigenous communities across Turtle Island and beyond.

On September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation recognizes the violent legacy of colonialism in Canada and the ongoing disenfranchisement of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples.

Today and the following days are an opportunity to recognize the visionary strength, leadership, and knowledge of Indigenous communities across Turtle Island and beyond.

Despite the resilience and strength of Indigenous communities, Canada still has a long way to go in addressing ongoing injustices. Since August 29, nine First Nations people have died when coming in contact with either the RCMP or municipal forces. Grassy Narrows remains poisoned, with 90 percent of members suffering from mercury poisoning. The Trudeau government continued to push Bill C-15, version 2.0 of what Pierre Trudeau and Jean Chrétien tried to implement in 1969 with their White Paper, to dissolve all legal obligations and existing treaties. Indigenous procurement and academia are rife with Indigenous identity fraud. It's essential to educate and stay informed on the true history of this country and the current events—beyond yesterday's media cycle.

Last year, we created a living document that would allow us to catalogue everything over the year. With over 100 entries, it's a resource that we can continue to grow and refer back to. Truth and reconciliation are ongoing, and this document is a work in progress that will evolve.

We encourage non-Indigenous readers to take action, whether self-educating, donating, or amplifying Indigenous perspectives. We hope this document acts as a solid starting point.
